Maybe we, why don't we sit right here for half an hour?
Stay with me.
Such a simple request, such a simple way to repay the Retriever, yet so hard at the same time. The last time he had heard those words, they had been from his first owner. She had been curled up in a ball on her bed, crying because of her father and something he had done to her. Mercutio had offered as much sympathy as he could, feeling her sorrow, sensing it. And he had thought she wasn't responding, so he had turned to hop down from her bed, hopeless. But she had reached out and grabbed his collar. 'Stay with me, Mercutio.' And like a good dog, he had. But she hadn't stayed with him. She had left him.
But Scatter was not Carol. And, Mercutio did want to stay with her, because he felt that he could offer enough comfort and protection to last through the night. He would not be sleeping. No, of course not. Mercutio did not sleep when it was night, so there was no way that anything would be able to slip past him and harm Scatter while he snoozed peacefully. Absolutely no way possible.
"Of course I will." He said quietly, before gently laying his head down on her back. "I'll be right here, and you don't have to worry about a thing, I promise." He reassured quietly, knowing that there wasn't any way he would leave her. Not here. Not now. Not ever, unless she wanted him to, of course. Because for once, Mercutio felt needed again, and that was all that he asked.
We'll speak of what a waste I am, and how we missed your beat again!

Scatter Please please please She felt his head resting on her back and it reassured her for some reason. She heard his words and realised she had spoken out loud when she had thought that she was only thinking her short request. She could feel herself drifting off, feeling safe enough to sleep with him being there. It only took a short while before she fell into a deep sleep, it was the first time that she'd slept in days. The first time she'd felt safe enough to sleep in days.
When she woke up with a start she jumped up onto her feet and looked around, she had gotten so used to not sleeping that having been asleep had shocked her somewhat. Which was why she'd jumped up so suddenly when she'd woken up. But then she remembered that Mercutio had been there and she looked around to see if he was still there. It was very early in the morning, with the sun only just starting to show itself. Being reassured that she hadn't just drifted off by herself she sat down, the soreness of her body coming to her in a big wave of pain.
She groaned in pain slightly before lying down again. Maybe if she just kept lying down it wouldn't hurt so much. But that wasn't true, it still hurt for her to just lie down as well. She whined quietly then lifted her head again. She wasn't really hungry this morning, which was new to her as well. But that was because she'd eaten the night before. After she'd been saved by Mercutio.

Maybe we, why don't we sit right here for half an hour?
As he knew he would, Mercutio had stayed awake all night, simply thinking. Every time he would hear a sound, he would lift his head and look around, alert. Twice it was a mouse, once a human passing by the alleyway. The closet he had came to attacking someone was when the club owner came out at closing time to throw away the trash and startled him, causing Mercutio to growl. He had noticed who it was, though, and softened, whining apologetically. The man had seemed to notice, because he proceeded to throw the trash away, and then calmly walk back into his club, no longer disturbing the dogs.
He had stayed with Scatter, just as he had promised. And, in the early hours of the morning, he was there when she woke up. He was not laying beside her, because he was sitting in the opening of the alley, making sure that no humans came along and disturbed Scatter, now that they were rising to go to work. When Scatter jumped up, Mercutio instantly whirled and hurried to her side. He was concerned, watching as she groaned in pain and sak back to the ground.
"Are you alright?" He asked instantly, sitting down beside her and very gently nudging her, as not to injure her further. He watched her with concern in his eyes, awaiting her answer.

Scatter Please please please She noticed him next to her when he nudged her softly and she offered him a slight smile when she heard his question. "I forgot." She said, meaning the night before. But it was only in that moment when you just wake up and your mind is yet to remind itself of everything that happened the day before. She sat up again slowly, nudging him back lightly. "Did you get any sleep?" She asked him, her tone questioning as she watched him and waited for his answer.
She stood again and shook herself lightly, managing to hold in the yelp that almost escaped her. Then she was fine again. A bit of movement would be good because it would loosen her sore muscles and make her less sore. She was guessing that he was sore too. She let her gaze move to his wounds that she'd cleaned the night before, just to make sure they were still clean, if they weren't then she would clean them again.
She looked around, just to make sure that there were no humans anywhere near. Then she looked at him again as she waited for him to say something. She was happy to be in his company, having already decided that she likes him. He'd helped her and been very nice to her and she felt safe around him. Something she didn't always feel around a lot of dogs.

Mercutio nodded, understand. He had been jumping up all night, thinking that he heard something, and then grimancing as he muscles ached, throbbing painfully. It had helped after he had moved around a little, but each time he forgot, and each time he leaped up without knowing. The pain would only last for a short time, before it reduced to a dull throb. But, oh, he knew.
He shook his head at her question, smiling slightly. "No. I didn't get any at all, but don't worry. I never do." He said. And it was true. Lately, all he had been doing was taking very short naps. He hadn't gotten a full nights- or, days -sleep in so very long, and he had to admit, he was slightly tired. But Mercutio wouldn't let that bother him.

Scatter Please please please She heard his answer to her question and she looked at him with slight concern. "You should've gotten some sleep too." She told him, her tone calm. She walked over to a trashcan, sniffing at it before looking at him again. She waited to see if he would say something before she moved on to a different trash can, sniffing at that too before she raised herself and placed one paw lightly on the edge of it so that she could look inside. She wasn't really hungry, just looking to see if there was anything interesting, which there wasn't.
She took her paw off the trashcan and put it on the ground again before she went towards him again. She had a smile on her face, she was ignoring the pain because she knew it would go away soon enough. She was used to pain, she got pain inflicted on her all the time. She licked his face lightly before she walked away from him again, wagging her tail slightly as she looked around at some more things in the alleyway that they were in. Now that she'd gotten some sleep she was in a much more playful mood again.
A playful mood was her usual mood unless she was lonely and anxious or tired and hurt. She was a very playful dog most of the time. She was trotting slowly from one place to another as she sniffed at everything. Playing games might have to wait a while because she was too sore to do anything drastic, which was why her movements were somewhat slow.

Mercutio watched as Scatter moved about, smiling to himself. He was glad to see her moving about. There was one thing that the male was absolutely positive of: he liked the girl. She was sweet, and caring. Not to mention, now that he could see, playful. And she depended on him, or had at a time. And it made Mercutio feel loved again, even if he really wasn't. Which was more than he could ask more. Much, much more than he could ask for. He doubted she felt the same way about him, which was why the male shut his mouth for once.
"It's nothing to worry about." He said, chuckling. "I've had a rough past, and due to it, I've been scarred. I've never told anyone this, but I tend to suffer from horrid nightmares. I panic in my sleep, and it scares me." He frowned, quiet for a moment, before he walked over to a garbage can and then peered in himself. He leaned over, taking a large bite out of a hamburger, before turning to look at Scatter.
"You probably think I'm crazy now." He said with a warm smile, wagging his long tail as he grew slightly playful himself.

Scatter Please please please She turned her head to look at him as she listened to his words. "I hate nightmares." She commented calmly, hearing the rest of his words. She turned her head and smiled at him before trotting over to him, her tail wagging slightly. "I don't think you're crazy." She told him, wagging her tail a bit more, licking his face playfully and affectionately. "Nightmares scare me too." She told him calmly before she moved away from him slightly again.
"I panic when I'm alone for too long." She said. "That's crazy." She commented playfully. Leaning down with the front half of her body before leaning back she stretched her sore muscles. Then she just stood and watched him, wagging her tail. She didn't plan on leaving him, or letting him leave her. Because she liked being around him, which meant she wanted to stay with him. She liked him. And if he was playful too then she would like him even more. Because that meant that they would be able to play games together.

Mercutio was stunned. So she didnt' think he was crazy, or danger, and she proved it by playfully moving forward and licking his face lightly, before moving away from him, and then explaining her own fear. "What? That's not crazy at all!" Mercutio said happiy, wagging his tail again as he watched her. "No one likes to be alone. Not even me." He said with a smile.
"But now," Mercutio said, his smile turning into a silly grin, "you might think I'm crazy. Because I'm in a playful mood, and therefore feel like playing tag while most of the humans are still asleep, if you do. So I'll give you...ten seconds." He said with a short laugh, watching Scatter for her reaction.

Scatter Please please please She listened to him, a happy smile on her face. When he said that he felt like playing tag she wagged her tail ecstatically. Before he could get the ten seconds out she was gone, heading around the corner and out of the alley. He would probably be able to catch her easily, which was why she was going to try and find a spot where she could hide or something. She found another alleyway and headed down it, it turned a corner before coming out on another street. Playing tag was where her name originated from.
She went down this small alley, finding a few trashcans to move behind and she stood there, crouched down slightly as she waited for him to come. She was listening carefully so that she would be able to hear when he was coming. Since he would be able to see her if she had a look. She was smiling happily still, her tail wagging slightly but not enough to hit anything and make a noise. She loved tag, it was more fun with more than just two dogs but two was enough to play this favorite game of hers too.
She wasn't sure how she would be able to catch him yet because she was guessing that he would be a lot faster than she was. She'd have to somehow outsmart him, that was how she usually won at these sorts of games. She was smart, even if she wasn't the strongest or the fastest of dogs.
