When the first pioneers set foot on the great Americas, they brought many new thing with them Horses, metal, guns, dogs, sheep, etc. However not all of the things immigrated over were an asset to the pioneers. You see an infection, a parasite, that has been long dormant in the bellies of the livestock they brought, reeked havoc on the predator animals.
Wolves and large cats would eat the sheep or cows, and get infected, they would fight with each other and get infected. This infection spread like wildfire and the parasites, who like other parasites wait in their first host to eventually be eaten by their ideal host, multiplied and latched into the predators insides. They changed the chemistry of their body, consistently tearing the muscles a little so new muscle can grow on top of it, exercising the senses to an inhuman amount. They fought off disease and kept the wolves alive far longer then they are meant to live.
These parasites, come to be known as Seamworms, were hard to make happy. They demanded food, an a lot of it, and when denied food they pump adrenaline enough to make even the most docile canine launch into a frenzy, eating the nearest source of meat to them; whether it be a deer, rabbit, or their best friend. All over the infected wolves succumbed to their hunger. They attacked humans, who retaliated by avidly hunting them to near extinction.
They needed an answer and they got one; a pack was formed called the Sycophants, made up by infected wolves and dogs who have learned how to control the Hunger. Infected canines from all over joined this pack and trained their mind to be the stronger will, and not give in to the parasite's demands. A new peace was ushered in. Can this peace last?
